Principal Investigator

Drew Schwartz grew up in Georgia where he was a national champion three-day eventing equestrian as a teenager. He received a BS in Chemistry and Biology from Duke University (GO BLUE DEVILS!). He completed MD and PhD degrees from Washington University School of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program. He performed PhD research in the laboratory of Scott Hultgren, PhD where he interrogated the host-pathogen interaction to understand how E. coli cause severe urinary tract infection. Drew completed pediatric residency and infectious disease fellowship through the ABP Accelerated Research Pathway and the Pediatric Physician-Scientist Training Program (PePSTP) at Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. During his fellowship research in the laboratory of Gautam Dantas, PhD he investigated antibiotic effects on the infant gut microbiome to identify biomarkers and mechanisms of late-onset sepsis using multi-omics and animal models. He is passionate about predicting and preventing serious bacterial infections, especially from antibiotic resistant organisms! In his spare time, he plays and watches basketball (DUKE!), road and mountain bikes, and spends time with his westie Calla Lily and wife Annie.
